Michael Holleman, agricultural education teacher at North Wilkes High School in Hays, was awarded a grant for $835 for his project, “Chop Shop.” The funds will allow him to purchase a metal cutting miter saw to teach students metal fabrication, which is a vital component of North Carolina’s agriculture mechanics curriculum.Anna Peterson, band teacher at Forbush Middle School in East Bend, won a grant for $310 for “Cross Curriculum in the Band Room.” The project will allow students to see the connections between what they are learning in other classes and the music being composed for band by North Carolina composers who are working today and allows for the purchase of music for the students to play.Becky Vanderheide, Mountain View Elementary School in Hays, will use her $703.70 grant to make sure her students are “Building Minds with Play.” The funding will allow students in the moderate and mild disabled classrooms a chance to work with materials during their media center visits that would challenge them in movement, physical strength, dexterity, mental clarity and communication.Tharrington Primary School, will use his $1,000 grant for “LegoSchoolLand in BHT,” allowing students to develop creative skills and social skills fundamental for success in the current world culture. Juan Diaz, a teacher in the Dual-Language Immersion program at B.H.Tharrington Primary School in Mount Airy, will use her $513.52 grant for “Lights, Camera, Action! Using GreenScreen to bring Books to Life.” Greenscreens allow students to bring books to life using new, innovative technology. Hannah Grill, a second-grade teacher at B.H.Amey King, music teacher at Flat Rock Elementary School, will use her $739.98 grant for “Strumming Along and Getting Along – Using Ukuleles to Build Community.” The project will allow students of all ages to learn to play the ukulele.Kellie Hunter, also a first-grade teacher at Flat Rock Elementary School, will use her $359.80 grant for “Learning is Fun when You Can Boogie,” which will include the purchase of Boogie Board ReWrite Max tablets.
